USA! USA! USA!

  • Aug. 24th, 2008 at 1:00 PM

I just watched the USA Men's Basketball game which I recorded from 2:30 a.m. this morning. I am just so proud of our guys for achieving the gold. A huge congratulations to Coach K and his staff!

Best moment: When Kobe Bryant dumped a bottle of water over Coach K's head at the end. I don't think anyone has ever dared to do something like that before. :)

Olympics thrills

I just re-watched the race where Michael Phelps won his 8th gold medal, which is an astounding achievement. I'm enjoying this Olympics more than any one previously, aside from maybe the 1976 winter Olympics where I ran out and got my hair cut like Dorothy Hamill's just like every other 5 year old in America.

But as an adult, I am getting much more out of this year. There are so many interesting stories there, with Phelps and Dara Torres, The USA Men's and Women's basketball teams, the controversy over the Chinese gymnastics competitors, and just the general setting of the games in Beijing. Marathons being run through the Forbidden City! I wish I could see it first hand.

I'm mainly keeping up with Men's Basketball, which has allowed me to get a Coach K fix before the NCAA season starts. Hopefully, most folks know at this point that I am a die-hard Blue Devil. I am not an NBA fan at all, mainly because it seems to be more about egos and showboating than good teamwork, but that is not an issue with this team. (Okay, maybe some of the alley oops and reverse jams are showboating, but I see them more as morale builders in this case.) It was really gratifying to see the blow-out of Spain yesterday, and Coach K's tight defense and motion offense styles were clearly part of it. Play has been very unselfish. Also, it's nice to see Carlos Boozer on the team, even with his limited minutes as a third-string big man. I'm sure he's contributing greatly behind the scenes. Keep up the good work, team!
